According to the Cellular Telephone Industry Association (CTIA), 95% of text messages are opened within just a few minutes of receipt and virtually every phone manufactured worldwide has the capability to send and receive SMS. 85% of consumers receiving a Medical Text Alert take action on the alert in 30 days or less.

An example Medical Text Alert is when a diabetic patient gets a text alert about their labs, exams and other tests being due to complete. Or a medication alert about an unfilled prescription prescribed to manage a condition. Or if engaging in remote monitoring of blood pressure, an alert your blood pressure has been in an unhealthy range for an extended period. As a payer or healthcare provider, the text message statistics are hard to ignore. However, most payers and health care providers are not meeting consumer demands for technology that benefits the consumer's health care experience and outcomes. In part, because a comprehensive service was not available or interoperability issues prevented the sharing of the data.

Medicare has removed such obstacles in the past year, by approving vendors to receive data feeds for 50+ million Medicare beneficiaries. 4 years of health information is initally synced and then weekly updates commence.

Seema Verma, Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has made Medicare the #1 innovator in health care. This was the mission conveyed by Ms. Verma at HIMSS 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada and at the recent White House conference on August 13, 2018.
